Valley Grange Plans Family Fun!

“The focus of Valley Grange in the fall is getting dictionaries in the hands of third graders,” according to Valley Grange Master Jim Annis. “This year we’re wrapping up that effort with a day that’s all about family fun.” Annis went on to explain that a team of Grange Members will spend the morning of Friday, November 20 visiting elementary schools in S.A.D. 41. “We’ll start first thing in the morning at the Marion Cook School in LaGrange and finish up the morning at the Brownville Elementary School.”

The Guilford based group has made the “Words for Thirds Program” a signature community effort for some years now. A number of fundraisers are conducted throughout the year that make it possible for the Grange to provide every third grader “from Monson to Milo” with their own personal dictionary.” Program Director Walter Boomsma notes, “Grangers like to say ‘The work is the reward’ and that’s definitely true with this program. The kids get so excited!”

The team making the rounds in S.A.D. 41 won’t get much rest after they’re finished because they’ll be heading straight to the Grange Hall at the corner of Butter Street and Guilford Center Road in Guilford to prepare for an evening of family fun. Boomsma explained, “We’re really linking two important traditions of our Grange. This November Program has always been about “coming home” to good old fashioned family values and fun. This year we’re making it a major fun-raising and fund-raising event.”

The evening starts with a spaghetti supper served up from 6 PM to 7 PM at what Annis called “family prices.” Adults eat for $6, children under twelve for $3, and toddlers eat free. “Even at these prices, thanks to donations we expect this will be an important part of our fund-raising efforts.” Entertainment for the evening starts at 7 PM. Admission is by donation and will include “toe tappin and knee slappin” music by the Back Porch Bluegrass Band. Door prizes will be available. “You can win something just for coming,” Annis added.

One final component of this year’s family fun night is the drawing of the Grange’s traditional “meat or heat” raffle. Tickets are now on sale for $1 each and are available from any Granger. The winning ticket will be drawn during intermission and the lucky winner receives $100 of their choice of “meat” or “heat.”

Boomsma admitted it “would be fun to see some of our dictionary friends back here with their parents” adding that he hopes the community will join the Grange in this celebration. “Join us at the schools in the morning, come to supper, listen to the band,” he urged. “You can do one or all!”
